Yes, God has set us the loving example since ‘The Fall’. Humanity deserved (eternal) death (Genesis 2:16-17), but He prescribed the salvation plan for them instead (Genesis 3:15)
Destruction is our punishment, we deserve it. By grace, we have been forgiven.

Think about what? Not everything is as profound as you’d like it to be, because then, everyone would take your oneliner and drop to their knees in repentance. No no, there is nothing wrong with this verse as long as you don’t hate God. Those who love God, love his laws and those who don’t love God of course aren’t going to love this verse because it has a standard that they don’t aspire to attain so they say stupid stuff like the other guy as if God hated him first. He’s just mad because God set the rim a little higher than he wanted to jump, and I think God was actually trying to exclude him. He doesn’t want it bad enough. If Jesus said to strive to enter in to the Kingdom, he obviously wasn’t thinking it was going to be all inclusive and not only that but that it won’t be acheived by accident. But that’s okay, I will not offer up to God that which costs me nothing. At least, I hope I won’t because I don’t hate God and am quite happy with the denial of myself for the prize.

This wasn’t written for you. Context is everything. What is happening here? God has led the Israelites out of Egypt and is getting ready to lead them into the land He promised Abraham. He is setting down a standard for living. His chosen people (Jews in this passage) are to live different than the other nations. The center piece of their life and community was to be God and not the foreign gods. When people begin to live for God then their attention is taken off of themselves. Our standard of living is found in Matthew 5-7. It is impossible to live this life apart from Jesus.
I can understand the confusion, because the Bible is complex. It does appear that God is hate all the time but even here in Deuteronomy if you go down to verse 12 you will see that God is ready to show is “lovingkindness” to the Jews.
@ David Knapp, you’re right. Most people take scriptures out of context and construe them to mean whatever it is they want them to me.
