If you sell your daughter as a slave….

Exodus 21:7-11 And if a man sells his daughter to be a female slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights. If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.

PERSONAL COMMENTARY

If you’re this young lady, here’s your fate:

1) You are sold by your father as a slave
2) If you do not please your master, you must be redeemed
3) You cannot be sold to foreigners
4) If you’re selected to marry your master’s son, you become a daughter
5) If your husband then marries another you cannot be deprived of your marital rights
6) However, if you are deprived of these, you must go free

Two opportunies for freedom. Not bad.

This is the way things were done in this culture at this time.

    Anon,

This is written as God speaking so he’s the one giving this law here NOT a culture’s view of slavery at a given time…. but God’s view.

    Is that not the case?

    Paul

We’re opposed to slavery because we live in an era that’s anti-slavery. Anon is right – slavery 4000 years ago was commonplace. It wasn’t wrong to have slaves back then. God is implementing rules to ensure slaves were properly looked after, the first whiff of worker’s rights.

Nice jason, you just said god condones slavery, even sexual slavery, as long as they slave is not treated too badly.

I think a real god would have the foresight of seeing morality EVOLVE (yes evolve, need to hear it again ?) with time and slap every slave owner back to the 10th century BC.

I think I get it, your god is good, just not too good becuase every religeous person knows that anythign thats too good is really the devil’s work (sex /wink /wink)

I’m shocked…SHOCKED…to find that there’s slavery going on here! Are you telling me that ancient Israelites were not 21st-century Americans? The horror!

Wow. guess Jason and Anonymous speak the truth. you can take ANYTHING from the bible and simply skew in favor of your own personal bias. Slavery was fine then, and not so much now. So….god’s word changes according to the times. Typical, whatever someone wants it to say is what it says. You can legitimize anything then.

  • Matthew

Slavery in the Law (amongst Israelites at least) was a form of indentured labour that could last for a maximum of 7 years: See Leviticus 25.

  • Thomas

that means, this part of the bible aka word of god we can ignore/change?
who decides which parts of the gods word we can ignore/change, too?
maybe the “you shall not kill” part? circumcision? adultery?

    @T
“So….god’s word changes according to the times”
Malachi 3:6 “I am the LORD, and I do not change.”
Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
